Intro to Italian Music

The history of Western music, it is often said, is the history of Germanic music, due to the large volume of great works produced by German composers, from Bach to Mozart to Wagner, Mahler, and Berg.

What this statement misses, however, is that the origins of Western music actually came largely from the Italian Renaissance and early Baroque styles, with major influencers like Monteverdi effectively setting the theoretical stage for every composer to follow.

In the video below, you can get a quick introduction to the history of early Italian music, with a focus on how Monteverdi led the evolution of music from the Renaissance into the early Baroque era.

It was his work in contrapuntal harmonic constructions that paved the way for later Baroque composers, including JS Bach, and ultimately the development of Classical and Romantic Western music traditions.
